Mediation Skills for Key School Personnel and Student Wellbeing
Education leaders play a critical role in facilitating reconciliation between students involved in hurtful behaviours and conflicts.
Sage Mediation is engaged with educational institutions to prevent conflicts in school from escalating, with appropriate and timely use of mediation techniques that can help bring about reconciliation, even in disputes involving students’ parents.
Working with the Singapore Ministry of Education (MOE), Sage Mediation designed a day-long programme that includes key topics like:
- Key concepts in conflict management;
- Essential communication tools in conflict management;
- Managing stakeholders’ (students, parents) emotions through mediation; and
- Understanding reconciliation
The training incorporated classroom discussions and case studies specific to school-going children, adolescents, and their parents. The participants engaged in role plays and demonstration videos which focused on disputes occurring in Singapore schools.
At the end of the workshop, Sage Mediation trainers and senior MOE staff jointly facilitated a discussion to study the application of mediation within the schools.
The collaboration has spanned two years, and several participants have redesigned their school’s discipline and conflict management system to include mediation. They have also invited Sage Mediation to speak to their students and to allow their students to intern at Sage Mediation and consider a career as a professional mediator.
