Family mediations are, to me, some of the toughest.
Being there for disputants who have been deeply hurt and persevering when the inevitable setbacks occur requires courage and commitment. But, I have learnt that it is possible for mediation professionals to overcome our fears of managing difficult emotions and achieving amicable resolutions if we set our heart to it.
I thought to kick off 2025 by writing an article on how overcoming my early reluctance to do family mediations has improved my core practice as a mediator of commercial disputes.
This is also a good opportunity to do a shout out to the stalwart family mediators on the Sage Mediation panel who have been my inspiration and coaches: Teong Liang Yap, Michelle Woodworth, Angelina Hing.
